Why is Locker the backup?

N/A

Whitehurst played better, and one would think if either Whitehurst or Locker is on the team next year it would be Whitehurst.  Also earlier in the season, the consensus with posters here seemed to be that if Mettenberger started, he would flip flop with Locker with Whitehurst remaining the backup.

Why do you think Locker is backup?

Like lying that they'd leave if Locker didn't start 13 games?

whitehurst didnt play better. whitehurst couldnt lead a drive to save his life. he leached off of lockers field position and a surprise QB change in one game. however, he did throw less int's...  but

Office politics

This.

It's because Whitehurst can handle being inactive on game days and not become a problem. I'm sure some vets in the locker room supported Jake as the starter and would've taken offense to him being demoted to 3rd string.

They should have traded Locker before the deadline and gotten an extra 6th out of him.

no one conceded that locker would be 3rd.... well, maybe those who just hated him because someone new was around and they were praying that dream of never ever seeing locker again would happen... but no sane person would rather have whitehurst. hell, why would he be a third? you wanna pamper Mett? you dont drop two spots.

I have been wondering the same thing myself when they show him standing on the sidelines.

Yeah Whitehurst often greets Mettenberger when he comes off the field and they huddle together to look at photos etc.   Perhaps Locker joins them when the camera pans away, but I have seen little interaction between him and Mettenberger on the sidelines.
